Situation:
- 1st: go to homepage, and click in US currency (for example)
- 2nd: go to admin, create a new currency (BRL for example)
- 3rd: disable all others currency and set BRL as default
- 4th: go to home again, and look at currency symbol (it stays US, and you cannot change to BRL)
It occur for you too?
This is not a bug
It's because you have set a session/cookie when changing currency on the front-end and then mess around with the currencies in admin
Clear your cookies and all should work fine

Thanks Simon, I was going crazy trying to figure this out.
If you are anal like me and want to know it all right down to the details then do this: Open your browser options and then view the cookie list. Search for the site that is causing currency issues and then look for cookie name: currency
Delete only that cookie and as Simon says: all should work fine.
