Flat Rate shipping options (solved)

Using oc 1.5.0.5. I have one category of items I'd like to apply flat rate shipping to. However this flat rate would be zone based, ie this state $5 and that state $10. I cant really use weight based shipping because if you have a quantity of 2 i need to charge shipping for both items. So 2 of item A shipped to this state would total up to $10 on the shipping. Now here's another kink I have another category which will be free shipping. IF you mix and match items from the two categories it all needs to add up. I tried to copy the flat rate shipping module and assign two geozones to it but cant checkout when I enable my copied flat rate zone. I basically followed the instructions for copying a module posted here in the forum. I've looked at a bunch of extensions but nothing seems to encompass all of this. Thoughts? Suggestions?

It sounds like my Category-Based Shipping module would work for you. You can set rates for each Geo Zone based on the categories products are in, and combine active rates within a Geo Zone by taking the average, highest, lowest, or sum of the calculated charges.
