I am using a feed, which includes product image URLs. So this is how I import product images with the import/export tool:

1. Download the images with eGet (http://www.bainsoft.com/product/image-downloader.html). You can copy paste the list of URLs. It saves the images with the name in the link. E.g. the link is http://static.base.com/images/standard/ZZZ40173.jpg the image name will be ZZZ40173.jpg.

2. Since in my feed it appears the full URL, I have to delete this part http://static.base.com/images/standard/, because my picture name doesn't contain that. I use the replace function in excel: Find what: http://static.base.com/images/standard/; Replace"blank"; replace all.

3. Upload the pictures with FTP

And voila!

P.S. Eventually you can rename the pics like "data/PS3/codblackops.jpg" with concetanate. data/PS3/ is the forder, where I have the images in the FTP directory.

then you need to edit the import/export tool script to:

(a) check to see if the image already exists in image/data folder
(b) if it doesn't to fetch it from your image host into the image/data folder.

Does this sound correct?

I just downloaded the images in a folder, called "PS3" on my computer, then uploaded the pics to "image/data/PS3"
I didn't make any changes in the import/export tool script.

I tried now and worked perfect for me 8)

in import/export tool there is a column, where you write the location of your image. you have to upload the images via FTP and write it into that column

or probably I misunderstood your problem...

if there is the same link for every product , then this method wont work. but you can download the pictures in bulk with eGet

So the images HAVE to be in YOUR server/OC directories?

You cannot link to an image on another site via the full url?
