Gallery Extension 1.5.0.x
Really?SXGuy wrote:... It was originally made by Amdev @ Siamopencart.com for 1.4.9.4 but i have re written all the parts needed to enable it to work with 1.5.0.x ...
I first built an image gallery for OpenCart 0.7.7 (for myself), released it for "public consumption" around version 1.1.something. Current versions on my own site are for OC 1.4.7 (free) and OC 1.4.8b (commercial @ $4.50), which didn't need updating for 1.4.9.x as it is fully compatible with ALL 1.4.9.x versions.
You made enquiries about an image gallery here viewtopic.php?f=110&t=34506, I pointed you towards the existing module (and a demo) and informed you that I will be updating it for 1.5.0 shortly, then you go and do this!
Looking at the screenshots, it looks the same as my own. Sure there are differences in the code, but it doesn't look like there is that much difference in the way it works.
This isn't the first time that one of my modules has been copied by someone else, who then claims it as their own work. Let's see, there's a "News/Blog" module that I originally released for OC version 0.7.7 that has been copied by others, FAQ pages (also released at version 0.7.7). There's also a Poll module that, although originally someone else's work, had been rebuilt by me to comply with the OC framework and released as an update to the original author's work (with his permission). Even Daniel has tried to "undermine" my efforts with the "Welcome" message (intended to replace my Homepage module). And someone even released some form of "layout" modification for the homepage, with tabbed modules after viewing some work I had in development in that area. Frankly, I'm sick of it!

I did say to you at the time that i was currently working on updating a free version. So i didnt hide it from you.
When i say it was originally done by Amdev @ Siamopencart.com, i am going with the information supplied in the READ ME.txt file, i got it from his website, and updated it.
I had and have no idea whether you wrote it or anyone else wrote it. I just simply went with the information i had.
I have no trouble crediting you or anyone else for the work, it isnt as if i claimed it to have been my own work.
I did actually say all i did was update it to work with 1.5.0.x.
I released it because i wanted to share it with the community, i had no intension on stepping on anyones toes, i have no problem with removing it if you wish.
Now I also know there are people who will straight up rip off your code and claim it as their own. I had one person do that here on the extension store a while back. They even kept my readme with my contact information in it. Those kind of people are worth getting angry with, but this guy gave credit to where the mod came from. I'm sure that if you want to sell a gallery script you can add some advanced features and still do so.

Yeah, I probably went a bit overboard.Xsecrets wrote:wow fido that's a bit harsh...
True. He didn't steal any of my code, but he did steal some ideas. For example, the "Latest Products" used to be a function that was built-in to the homepage controller. When I released my "Homepage Module" 3 years ago for OpenCart 0.7.7, I converted the homepage into a module place-holder and got rid of the latest products function and replaced it with a module. A couple of versions later, I added a "Featured Products" module to the package. Qphoria then released his "Featured Products" module. Daniel incorporated these into OpenCart at version 1.4.8.... I know daniel didn't steal any of your code, though yes he does incorporate the functionality of many mods into the core ...
Yes, he did. I included that bit in what was "quoted".... but this guy gave credit to where the mod came from.
Uh, yeah, after I pointed you at my gallery.SXGuy wrote:I did say to you at the time that i was currently working on updating a free version. So i didnt hide it from you.
Naah, leave it there. I'll just have to build a better gallery (if I can be bothered).I released it because i wanted to share it with the community, i had no intension on stepping on anyones toes, i have no problem with removing it if you wish.

believe me I know how you feel. I had modules for both product compare and product extra fields and both were added to the core in 1.5.x, but that's just the way it goes.fido-x wrote: True. There's also the "domino" effect. Prior to the release of 1.4.8, there was an average of 114 downloads per week from my site. This has dropped significantly since the release of 1.4.8, to just below 37 per week. My Alexa ranking has also dropped by around 400,000, and I "lost" around $7,000 in the StatInternet valuation of my domain name.Xsecrets wrote:believe me I know how you feel. This forum has made me realize that I am sure people will steal my ext's. Like x-secrets said, that will happen with software.

X-Secrets-I didn't actually mean stealing, but you know it happens regardless anywhere in the open source world. I like your wording better about "re-implementing your idea".Xsecrets wrote:well if someone actually takes your code and claims it as their own let one of the moderators know. We don't allow "stealing" code however anyone is free to re-implement your idea with their own code and yes that will happen.
