I was wondering about this as well, as I've liked using them as references for how to set up URL aliases for other pages that I create. It was nice to have them as samples from the get-go.
i'm not sure if the aliases are working right now anyways. asked about this in a few places, but haven't gotten confirmation if there is a known issue or not. aliases stopped working for me in 0.7.6.1.
at first i thought it was because they were simply not created by the install script, but i have attempted to manually add the aliases back and they would not work for me.
ginghamgirl - have you tried creating an alias manually? do they work?
you can see examples of how they are meant to be set up by logging into the demo cart:

username/password are demo/demo.
