The problem is not with OpenCart, it is with WordPress.

You need to contact WordPress with regards to this one.

Well the problem is that 0.7.8 has url alias on by default. It's likely that wordpress has its own htaccess that is overriding something for 404 pages so you are going to its 404. But 0.7.9 has a bunch of additional fixes as well as the ability to disable url alias until you figure out where the problem is.

0.7.9 should get you up and running.

Hey Qphoria,
I installed Open Cart 0.7.8 in another sub-domain, so that I could check what exactly is the cause; wordpress or open cart. I was surprised that after installing open cart in a sub-domain with no connection with wordpress that existed in the main domain, open cart gave me 404 error and this time with its own message stating that the page cannot be found.
So, the issue lies in open cart and not with wordpress. Wordpress came into the picture as it was configured to handle any 404 errors. And thats what it did for open cart errors too.
With Open Cart 0.7.9, I had issues in sub categories being created. The sub-category description would not show. Instead there was an error like so and so file at so and so path could not be accessed. I am waiting for Open Cart 1.0, which Daneil informed would be out by Monday.
In the meantime I am toying around with Magento, its kinda more complicated but I have already spent a week playing with it and can handle myself I guess. By monday I will take a decision which eStore software, I will go ahead with. So lets see. Any ways thanks to you guys for helping me out. I appreciate that really!

Hey Qphoria,

Thanks for all the replies. I have de-installed my Open Cart installation, so the link in the very first post will lead to a 404 page handled by my wordpress installation and not Open Cart. I was wondering if people may get confused when the read the first post, click on the "page" link provided there and find no Open Cart estore there. If you understand what I mean.
Anyways thanks for you replies, it shows you are really concerned to people's issues with Open Cart and are ready to help anytime.

Anyways, who is Daniel? He sent me a mail telling me that Open Cart 1.0 will be available by Monday, like today.
Secondly, someone from http://www.karzina.com, sent me a personal message (pm) and asked me to check the site. I went and downloaded that but it gave me an error right at the start. I mean I had to create a database and db user. But it should ask me for all that in the second page of the installation. The first page itself would not load. I was already frustrated with my failing internet connection and other shopping carts going kaput too.
BTW, I was trying out the following in my quest for building an eStore:
> Wordpress eCommerce: http://www.instinct.co.nz/
> Open Cart 0.7.9: http://www.opencart.com
> Magento Commerce: http://www.magentocommerce.com
