I have a project coming up that I would like to use OpenCart for, because the code is clean and it looks like it's going to be pretty easy to modify and customize.

However, there are some things that OpenCart doesn't do yet that I need it to do. I've read the contribution threads and others and I know some of the things are in the works. I can create all these myself, but I don't know if I can complete all these mods, a design, setting up the items, plus some customized mods that are only going to apply to my store, by the time I need it completed which is the end of January.

If anyone has any of these done I would be very interested. If they are maybe partially done, I would be very happy to get what's done so far so I can finish it up. I would release all the mods back to the community.

* UPS API shipping integration, including getting the shipping cost while viewing the cart (before checkout).
* Only charge taxes to people located in my State.
* Redesign checkout so it shows recap of items, tax, shipping and total charges.
* Paypal Pro (I saw the commercially available mod... Not interested in giving out site access and the price is too high.)
* Allow customer to check out without creating an account. I saw the thread about the hack about changing the password field to a hidden field. That's a little insecure, but I might develop something based on that.

I've been using CubeCart 3 for quite some time and there's a lot of things I like about it, but they are phasing out CubeCart 3 in favor of the V4, but I don't care for the new version that much and I would rather use something open source.

Oh yeah, one more thing that I forgot to mention was that eventually I will need to make it accept promotional/coupon codes. Are there any plans on making this functionality available as well?

You just opened a nice can of worms here...
Technically, if you set "Display prices with Tax" to NO. This should already work in the core functionality, as it does the tax calculations at the last step, and only charges tax if customer geozone = store taxable goods zone. But what about if "Display prices with Tax" is YES? Then technically you are showing the Price + the default tax, but without knowing where the customer lives, those prices can change. And they do change once you log in and it checks your zone. But prices could be higher initially which could scare off customers.
So technically prices shouldn't show with tax unless the customer is logged in. I'm going to create a new thread to discuss this.

Doesn't it already do that?

We were looking at rewriting the checkout for 0.8. One store i saw online that I liked put the password input on the "Thanks for shopping" page as optional. Simply "Thanks for shopping with us. If you'd like to save time on your next order, simply create a password to associate with your email address, and we can save your information for next time"

I have only tried out the demo so far. I am installing 0.7.9 right now to test out. Promo codes must be new with 079?

I found the howto and the documentation about the tax zone after I posted. Seems like it would work ok. Showing tax inclusive isn't what I want. I think I'll be able to figure it out though.

I'll see what the checkout looks like in the latest version. Yes I've seen what you said before and that would be really nice.

I think the demo is 0.7.7... its very outdated.... then 0.7.8 must have added coupon codes.. but 0.7.9 is the latest and greatest and has over 100 bug fixes. The goal is to make it stable so that in 0.8 we can start adding new features
