So far, I got some few ideas like possibility for cron jobs, (better) logging of sent emails and statistics. Trying to find a way of tracking the reviews written because of the mails generated by this, but that might get hard without touching existing files.
I'm also looking into adding the "middle text" as suggested by i2paq, that you can enable/disable if needed.

The problems you are experiencing with the images being too big: What mail client are you using? They are showing fine for me.

Re: the links... they do work with my store that has a default product template, but one of my stores has a modified product.tpl and this may be where the issue is.
