I hold my hands up. I have a donation link on my site and in my signature, but it's only because some people asked if they could donate. I'm not doing this for the money (which is lucky considering how little I get

), it just keeps me out of trouble.
I also occasionally direct people to solutions on my website, but they are all free, as are the templates I've posted so far in the Extensions section. The reason I put solutions on my blog rather than here is more for my own benefit, so they are all in one place for my future reference.
I have a shop based on OpenCart which is doing pretty well, so providing some free templates and some help is my way of giving back.
But people are always going to try and exploit something that is successful for their own gain. There's already a template for sale for $26 that is basically one of my free ones with a few alterations. I gave it away for free, so I can't complain. However, as I wasn't credited despite it being mostly my work I did ask for a donation.
I guess the problems occur when all people do is take and never give. There are a lot of template developers out there who have posted about 4 times in the forums. And every post promotes their templates. It would be nice if they gave something back, but you can't force them. Unfortunately that's the way of the world.
If you try to get rid of commercialisation, where do you start and stop? Daniel is happy for people to sell commercial extensions and he profits from it. Others will promote themselves in other ways. I say let them. If someone starts trolling, posting adverts everywhere, the moderators will soon put a stop to it.
