Ok, pulling this from the shotbox thread.
There is already enough spam, round about advertisement, suggested to visit XYZ page for help and only to see the tard is advertising himself.
What is the policy movement at the moment here?
It's getting a bit tedious to read the spam, read people offering a link but in reality is to their own service and what not, on top of the increase in footer notes that are hitting up people for donations.

To be honest, I really feel sorry for Daniel, since I think that he should be getting something for his efforts (or is he  ) and yes, Q too. (I haven't forgotten you -- but ... you do have a pretty good site going on there ;) )

So ... what's up ?

I hold my hands up. I have a donation link on my site and in my signature, but it's only because some people asked if they could donate. I'm not doing this for the money (which is lucky considering how little I get ;) ), it just keeps me out of trouble.

I also occasionally direct people to solutions on my website, but they are all free, as are the templates I've posted so far in the Extensions section. The reason I put solutions on my blog rather than here is more for my own benefit, so they are all in one place for my future reference.

I have a shop based on OpenCart which is doing pretty well, so providing some free templates and some help is my way of giving back.

But people are always going to try and exploit something that is successful for their own gain. There's already a template for sale for $26 that is basically one of my free ones with a few alterations. I gave it away for free, so I can't complain. However, as I wasn't credited despite it being mostly my work I did ask for a donation.

I guess the problems occur when all people do is take and never give. There are a lot of template developers out there who have posted about 4 times in the forums. And every post promotes their templates. It would be nice if they gave something back, but you can't force them. Unfortunately that's the way of the world.

If you try to get rid of commercialisation, where do you start and stop? Daniel is happy for people to sell commercial extensions and he profits from it. Others will promote themselves in other ways. I say let them. If someone starts trolling, posting adverts everywhere, the moderators will soon put a stop to it.

To be honest, I haven't realised noticed that much in the way of flagrant advertising. I tend to ignore it in signatures. Personally I'd turn signatures off it it's hard to distinguish between that and regular posts.

In terms of feeling sorry for Daniel, I don't. He chose to create this software because he likes coding, problem solving or running a successful project. While we can all help to reward him for his hard work, the reality is that he wouldn't be doing it if he didn't want to.

I ran a successful music website for nearly 10 years, receiving about 30 million hits per month and it cost me quite a bit of money to host and develop it (for no financial return), but I did it because I loved it. I'm sure it's the same with Daniel.

The worst thing is when people are unappreciative, though. A few times I'd reached a point where I didn't have the time, energy or money to continue working on the project, so I asked for donations. And what did I get? A bunch of insults and people claiming that I was having a hissy fit. So after that I decided it wasn't worth my time giving something away for free when no one appreciated it. It's not always about the money.

Totally agree that it isn't always about money.
Originally in regards to this post I was worried that a similar situation as you described about people having hissy fits here.

Personally, I post a lot here to help people and by doing so I hope that when I post wrong solutions that someone else will chime in with a proper answer which helps me to learn too.

I post here because I think I have some good ideas to offer in terms of helping OpenCart become a better product. I also like to help people out because I've certainly had lots of help from people in the past (not just here, but countless other websites). I've only got a few OC installations running (all v1.3.4) and don't have any projects in the pipeline that require me to use OpenCart, but I have a keen interest in seeing the software progress. Despite my enormous workload at the moment, I'd like to try to contribute more tangibly to the product in future.
