Adding extra custom into Order

Hi,
Can I extend the Order entity by adding some extra column into Order table. If I do so, what is the pros and cons?

I am new to OpenCart. All of your advice are highly appreciated.

I'm new too with OpenCart (since last week) but I think you can use vqmod to make this. Look this vqmod example:
