Removing refine search from sub-category

Hi there
I wondered if someone can prod me in the right direction. I'm implementing some sub-categories on my site and want them to run off the same layout as the main category (a grid view). The easiest way I've found to do this is to edit the category module and create a new layout for these sub-categories that is in line with the main category (rather than trying to match the CSS of the refine search box)
My issue is that the page (see attached) still comes up with the refine search box below this module. I've followed the instructions in http://forum.opencart.com/viewtopic.php?t=41699 but this only removes the content within the box, not the box itself (i'm still left with the heading and the outline).
Any suggestions on how to completely remove this element?
