Where to start

Hi Folks,
Can you please tell me where to start with editing open carts templates. I have experience of creating websites from scratch using HTML and CSS but am struggling a bit with the concept of editing a pre built site.
Are there any good guides/ pdfs online to follow? I think I'd rather come up with my own design rather than buy a template for my site. I want to really simplify everything. Eg just have the bare minimum in the columns etc.
Can someone let me know how to start, where the right files are to edit. I'm sure when I am pointed in the right direction and get started I'll pick it up pretty quickly.
Ta
Matt

\catalog\view\theme\default\template
Start in the "common" folder for basic stuff, then work your way into other pages. Hope you are comfortable with a little PHP.

Hi,
Thanks for that, I'm getting everything the way I want it. However, the one thing I can't find is the files relating to the left and right columns. I just want to remove a couple of things (currency and brands). Where can I do this?
Thanks
Matt

well if you just want to eliminate those boxes you can simply disable or uninstall them under modules in the admin

Ok, so far so good. I have the layout I want (near enough) now just trying to change some of the png files. I have started with the box_top file just to try it out. I based the new .png file from the default one so it is exactly the same dimensions. I edited it in adobe illustrator and saved it as box_top.png and uploaded it to my webspace, overwriting the default file. When I refresh the website there is no picture shown behind the box top, it's just white!
When I put the default .png file back it works fine.
Any ideas?

Hey,
That's all sorted now.
My next problem is trying to get my div4 links into a list. At the moment it looks a little bit like this.
Basket Checkout Account Log In
It is aligned on the right of the header but I want it to be like this
Log In
Account
Basket
Checkout
How do I go about doing this? I have tried breaks in the header.tpl and I tried a list but nothing seems to work.
How can achieve this?
