orders not appearing in opencart 1.5.4.1

Having a few issues with orders not appearing in the back-end. My wife is doing test purchases via her Paypal and although the confirmation emails are coming through both to the site and the seller and buyer Paypal accounts, there are no orders AT ALL in either the main Orders list or the Missing Orders filter. Think the IPN thing is working correctly as there are no errors related to the purchases in my error log and Paypal is not reporting anything unusual either. Site is not in maintenance mode so shouldn't be any kind of block. Probbly something fundamental I'm missing, but searching the forum is beginning to give me a headache.
The emails contain order numbers, so am assuming they have id's that are being logged somewhere - can anyone tell me how to find and read the database where these would be kept?
Using very slightly modified default installation (VQmod and a few minor theme tweaks plus Export/Import extension) on Apache with cPanel.
Any help greatly appreciated.

If you goto the IPN history panel in PayPal are they reporting a successful delivery or an error ?

So to me that looks right - and open cart sent both buyer and sender an email with order id to say the transaction had gone through. Just can't see it on the site. Here's the error log from opencart for this transaction:

why this is on the error log, i'm not sure, as it looks like everything checked out, hence VERIFIED. Let me know if this isn't as straight forward as it looks
