I thought if I posted the mocups a I made to create opencart is might help some templates designers produce so templates.

They are in PNG format and can be modified using adobe fireworks.

Yes, i think it would be nice.

I don't really understand the point of these. They are just screenshots of the admin section. Can't we just see them on the demo anyway?

if you use adboe fireworks you can modify the templates. they are all layered.

ahhh ok. Someday I will use proper templating tools. I always thought people just made them in text editor. No wonder I can never make one look good.

i think the templates are somewhat unflexible,
and now i understand why.

there is minimal css, lots of verbose html and pixel perfect
sizes -- a bit like the pre-css times, and i personally am
not happy with it. changing anything consistently
in a template takes a lot of time and typing.

i am reworking my template into a more css friendly
version.

well maybe when you are done you can release it so everyone can benifit.

my opencart version is quickly diverging from
mainstream :]

i have already implemented stuff like flexible cod fees,
better i18n support, a disclaimer start page for adult shops
and a configurable common/home (e.g. specials instead
of latest products). my templates are also changing a bit.

i still have lots of things to do, foremost being the
invoice numbering and i am not happy with the
current seo links either.

unfortunately this type of release only development
Daniel is using is not my cup of coffee, i can't and
won't wait months for simple fixes and i am reluctant
to work on patches that in his tree already will not
apply, it's just too much wasted work for everyone.
it's a one man show i am afraid.

actually, i think that this development model
will be the reason there will be forks all
over the place just like alegrocart.com
(but judging by the .zip only release, it's
no improvement in this regard)

technically, my local version is already
a fork as well..

zip only release? what does that mean? You want rar? gz? tarball?
alegro is a port of 0.7.9 (as Chromium was).. so it doesn't really count.

Then again.. ZenCart was a port of Osc and it took off.

it's not about the archive format,
it's about the source repository.

zencart's history page says it has
osCommerce heritage...

if you unhappy with it then post a better version and i might incoude it in the next version.

people in this topic keep complaining about problems with the current shoudl send me the fixes so i can include them in. better still would be to post them in OC bug tracker.

By the way. apart from the 1.3.5 release. normally new versions of OC are out every 2 weeks.

there is no point for me to send patches based on 1.3.4
when your tree is already somewhere else.

the default template does not bother me really,
i have already created mine and reworking it.

i think nobody expects new versions every 2 week..
actually, on the contrary. upgrading is stress
and risk. unless there is an issue that gets in
the way of functionality, upgrades are undiserable.

and because you release so many changes at
once, many things break. extensions, languages,
modules, etc.

having said all that, i like opencart, the code
is clean, easy to read and easy to modify.
it is an excellent base to start on.
i just simply prefer incremental changes.

Thank you for letting us know that. It's good, from a design, modification standpoint. However, all of these should be flattened, before use on a production site! So, thanks for letting us know! The site will load much faster with flattened images!

@loadaverage, maybe you should start a site, dedicated to your code improvements and implementation of Open Cart. Kind of like SSbits for SilverStripe. I would love to learn from you, how you are reworking the code, etc.
