coupon bug - well kinda a bug

when you go into the basket(cart) you have the coupon thing it says the coupon will be instantly applied.
Although when you click apply it says success but the discount is not shown until you got to the confirm stage of the checkout

I realise it has been some time since your post but I've been building my first OpenCart website and found how to change this text issue.

GoTo: catalog/language/english/checkout/cart.php

Edit the text on line 11 from:
Enter your code, hit the "Apply Coupon" button and watch your discount instantly be applied to your order.

To:
Enter your code, hit the "Apply Coupon" button. Your discount will be applied when you confirm your order.

or words to that effect.
