Hello all. Thank you for your help and support of this open source product.

I am configuring a webstore in the US, state of Pennsylvania, and I have to charge a 6% sales tax for anyone in the state (this part is already configured), but I also have to set up an additional 1% tax for those in Allegheny County. How do I do this? Thank you.

There is no county level for customer info, so it can't be done without a lot of work adding the county field.

I guess I will have to build a module. Unless... I could probably pay someone to do this for me; depending on how much it would cost.

Well the hardest part is getting the county info.
First you have to add it to the create account controller
and the language file
and the template
Then add it to the add address controller, language, and template
Then you have to add the field in the database for customer address
and also for order address
Then you'd probably want to see it in the admin section, so you'd need to add it to the order & invoice pages

Then how do you verify? Since county isn't used as a shipping value from post offices, if the customer figures out that its cheaper to lie about his county, and you don't watch it extremely carefully, he will mark it down for county A to get the cheaper rate, even tho he lives in county B.. you will still be shipping based on city/state/postcode... so it all seems moot.

Better would be to do it by zipcode, as that triggers the actual billing address check, and people are less likely to lie about that.

I got Shipping by postcode to work in my Zone Plus mod, I was looking into using a similar reuse of fields for taxes by zipcode.

I will look at your module. I have a list of all the zip codes for Allegheny County.

I need a module like this too. The problem with zip codes is that many of the zip codes in my area overlap the various tax districts, so one single zip code may have 3 different tax scenarios. The best solution is to do a zip+4 lookup and reference the sales tax that belongs to it. Zip+4 databases and lookup services are expensive, and not in my customer's budget. So far, having the customer elect to choose their tax area has worked well. I realize it's on the honor system, but it's the only way my customer can comply at the moment. There is a module for zencart which allows this, and I'm looking to do the same for opencart. I'm going to try to dig in and do it myself, but I'm not truly a programmer, so I'm looking at other modules for guidance. Sales tax in my area must be collected based on the shipping address. I need to narrow it down by city, county, and state.

One other idea could be by using a customer group. If a customer could choose their tax group they belong to during the registration step, then tax could be calculated based on the group they belong to. Again, for my purposes I actually need a shipping address group for this, since a customer from my area may make the purchase, but have it shipped as a gift to an out of state area. No sales tax would be required for this situation.
