When reaching the install screen it asks for database username, password, etc. I put it all the correct information (I've double and triple checked that I'm putting localhost along with correct database username and password) and it gives this error:

"Could not connect to the database please make sure the database server, username and password is correct"

Database user name and database name are the same. Database password is about 10 characters long, mix of letters, numbers and symbols (+, {, etc).

Any ideas?

Are you using shared hosting? Many times the web server and database server are different. If this is the case you wouldn't use localhost.

Thanks for the reply Daniel.

I'm using a virtual dedicated server, so it would be localhost.

I have a feeling it has to do with the password I selected.

Does OpenCart have issues with special characters in the password ($>*%)?

Has this issue been fixed in v1.3.3?

do you have a control panel?

if so look at exactly what the username and db name is. normally if its shared it will have a prefix on the username and database.

Thank you Daniel. I'm on virtual dedicated hosting though so I'm not sharing with anyone.

I ended up reinstalling and trying a new password and discovered it's that OpenCart doesn't allow special characters like >$ in the password for the mysql database. Which is really a shame since special characters are often a great idea in order to increase password security.

Is this rectified in v1.3.3 or are special characters in the mysql password still an issue for OpenCart?

I can confirm the same issue on 1.3.4. I had an ampersand in my db users password which was resulting in the same could not connect issue during the installation. I have created a new user without the & in the password and it works now.
