I think it would be nice if the login and registration could be in a lightbox pop up or a slide down panel.
Then you would not need to "navigate" anywhere. You could still have the account area for maintenance.

I was looking for this too, a login box like the one on vimeo. Is anybody up for this as a module? It would be a bestseller.
