Discount not shown on main product page

Hi
Does anyone know if the discount is only supposed to show when a product has been added to the basket?!

This is a much needed function. Having the discount not shown on the front page makes the customer unaware that the item is discounted or on sale. I have posted this question a while back and was not successful in finding the answer. Hopefully someone knows a quick fix to this as obviously the function is working, just not on the main product page.
