display subcategories on home page

I've been searching for a few hours and haven't had any luck. I have two parent categories. One has about 30 subcategories. I need to display those 30 subcategories (with the thumbnails) on the home page. If I add the "category" module to the home page it displays the two parent categories and then I have to click "holsters by make" in order to show the 30 subcategories. Any ideas?

Would there be any problems with me doing a permanent redirect to that page?
redirect www.mysite.com to www.mysite.com/category
