Using opencart with large product lists

I'm new to opencart (I've installed it on my test server, and looked at some other people's sites, but that's about it).
Before I go much further it would be good to know how well opencart handles sites with large numbers of products (potentially in the 10s of thousands). Has anyone got any experience of this around here?
Background: I have several sites on ZenCart which does everything we need (more or less) but is horrible code to work with. I'm looking for something cleaner to work with and so far opencart does look clean and under active development but it may be that it's not really aimed in the direction I need to go in.
