Blank store front on fresh install - v1.3.2

I've installed OpenCart 1.3.2, but after setting everything up, my store front is completely blank (zero output), but the admin section functions correctly. Any assistance would be appreciated.

- Linux OS
- nginx 0.7.61
- php 5.3.0
- mysql 5.1.36

Further info:

nginx's log file shows an internal server error (500) when index.php is requested.
No other details.

Is there a debug option for OpenCart, somewhere?

So far, found this error in system/logs/error.txt

I configured PHP to log errors to a file (running under spawn-fcgi). The error is:

PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function imagecreatefromjpeg() in /var/www/opencart.localnet/public/opencart/system/library/image.php on line 34

My installation meets all the requirements, as per the web-based installation checking and setup.

Please, could anyone shed any light on this?
