Default options values for products (how to)

I would like to set up default (pre-selected) values for options of products. In 1.2.9 the option value that came first in the sort order was set as default. However, in 1.5.2.1 there are no default values and an option dropdown would say "Please select" instead of showing a value.

A side effect of this is that if a user clicks "Add to cart" then he is taken to Product page instead of having the product added to cart. This flow might work with some products and some users, but is a bit dodgy as the customer has no idea why he is taken to product page instead of the item being added to cart...would be nice if a status message (like the one shown when a product is actually added to cart) is added saying "This product has multiple options. Please select desired options before adding to cart" is shown when the customer is directed to the product page.

But I digress. What I would like to do is to set up default option values so that these appear in the dropdown instead of "Please select". Also, when a customer clicks "Add to cart" on category page, I'd like the product to be added to cart with default option(s).

Is there an easy way to achieve this?

You're all over the place. Are you asking how to set up an option> Yes, you set up the option first, then add the option to the product when setting the product up. And yes.....being redirected to the product details page from category page is a pain in the ass (all on the account of needing to add an option.)

I know how to add an option. Within each option, you have to define values to choose from. My question is how to make one particular value the default value for that option?

e.g. There is an option Color. Values are Red, Green and Blue. I want Red to be the default/pre-selected value for Color.

Also includes the option to Add to cart from the category and module pages and have the defaulted items added to cart without going to the product page. (disabled in the xml file by default, but easily enabled)
