Really basic help

Am I missing something here?

I copied the default theme to a new folder, then tried to make a basic change to the CSS stylesheet.css like change the background to an image. I uploaded the folder and set the theme in the admin panel but no change to the store front!

I then tried to change it to a simple colour, black. But still no change am I missing something here?

yes you need to go into the layout.tpl change change the paths of the stylesheets.
