I seem to recall reading that you can not jump versions when upgrading, is this right?

For example, if I was on 1.2.8 would I be able to upgrade to 1.3?

I'm a little concerned as I wasn't planning on upgrading for a while now (I am on 1.2.9) but the idea of having to move with each new version seems a little strange. I don't really want to be upgrading my store every 4 weeks or so (from the dates on the threads in the announcement board, it was 4 weeks between 1.2.6 and 1.2.7, then 4 days!?! til 1.2.8 was out. 6 weeks for 1.2.9 then 4 weeks for 2.3)

Did I make this memory up or do can you only upgrade to the immediate next version?

The simple answer is to only upgrade when a required piece of functionality is added to the code base.

You do not have to keep up with the versions if your shop is functioning correctly.

In doing this you can take your time when performing an upgrade and perform lots of testing when applying or re-applying your modifications.

OpenCart is a constantly evolving solution with a very quick turn around to achieve a point at which the majority of required functionality is reached whilst keeping the code base as small and optimised as possible.

In short just stay involved with the project and only perform an upgrade when you need to.

What i do, which you may find helpful, is that i do a three way folder comparison.
First folder = 1.2.9 (original)
Second folder = 1.2.9 (with my changes)
Third folder = 1.3.0

What i am able to find out, is what changes i made to the original, and what changes have been made from my version to the new version.

What i can do now, is that if i have made a change to the original to get to my version, i can copy that change with a single click into the new 1.3.0

After going down the list, looking at any changes i made to the original 1.2.9, and making the same change to the 1.3.0, i will now have a version of 1.3.0 with all my changes.

Takes about 20 minutes to do

I'm going to add the latest version to subversion now. you should be able to look at all changes through the release.

OK, so my memory of reading that you couldn't skip a version was wrong.

For some reason I seem to recall reading that you couldn't go directly from 1.2.7 to 1.3 but had to go to 1.2.8 followed by 1.2.9 before you coule upgrade to 1.3. Thats what was getting me worried as there were new versions every month or so.

My site is working perfectly for what I have on it so I am happy to stick to 1.2.9 for quite some time and only upgrade the core when a new feature I want is in the core. This is good news.

Thanks.
