1.4.9.4 -- product thumbnails not displaying on sub-category

Hey guys,
I'm tearing my hair out over this.
My client has a sub-category of products, but their thumbnails are not showing up when viewing this link:
http://www.edensgarden.com/index.php?ro ... path=40_41
but they do show up when if you modify the url to:
http://www.edensgarden.com/index.php?ro ... ry&path=41
How can I have them display when viewing the correct URL ("40_41")?
BTW, I'm using version 1.4.9.4 (I'd like to upgrade but the client doesn't want too).
