I am on OC 1.4.9.6
Is it possible to send a notification to the customer when a product actually ships? We are a reseller, and we
have to place orders with the actual manufacturer for large items which are shipped directly from the
manufacturer via a freight carrier (not UPS,not FedExp, not USPS). We can find out when the item has
shipped and we need a good way to send an email to the buyer that the product is on the way.
How would it be best to do that within OC?
thanks for any advice

When editing the order history, you can just set the order status as "Shipped" and check the "Notify customer" box. I agree it's not the best solution, but it should hold you over until somebody (maybe me!) writes an extension to handle this better.

I was thinking it would be an automatic email sent to customer confirming their order shipped triggered
by us when we ship the order by going into OC admin or other trigger to cause the notification to go out.
For example the other day, I went to HP shopping site, and ordered some ink cartridges for my printer.
a few hours later I got an email saying my order had shipped.

I just tested what you recommend. Here is what I am thinking. It is sort of a 1/4 way there kind of thing. Here is where is falls a little short:
A) The email sent should have a customization with the store "template" look/feel that is immediately
identifieable by the customer as coming from the specific store they bought from. So that is a definite
table stakes when sending a notification
B) It should contain a list of the items being shipped to "re-affirm" what was purchase so they know
what to expect is coming to theirr shipping address
C) should support entry of maybe a couple of fields like: estimated arrival date, carrier name, shipping tracking number
so that the email notification would contain that on a line item or total order basis.
D) any other order info lik; Shipping Address, Order Total, Tax Applied etc. Just to make it really clear to customer.
E) the email contained a URL asking me to log in, except I think there is a disconnect on that. Some customers
don't ask to become registered acct users they may just buy without creating an acct.
Sounds like an extension is the way to go I guess.

Yeah, those are all great ideas. Would take some time to write something like that, but if you are interested in having me write a custom extension for you just drop me a line at http://www.opencartworld.com/contact
