Well AIM was the originator.. and their protocol is still the most stable one I've used for chat and file transfer. Even on the all-in-one programs like trillian, miranda, digby, and pidgin, AIMs file transfers always work perfectly. I've not been able to use MSN file transfer on any other program outside of the actual MSN messenger so they score "Epic Fail" from me.

Unfortunately, AIM is losing popularity more and more... and GoogleTalk would be the likely successor assuming it followed in Gmail's footsteps.. but by the time Gtalk came out.... people were already annoyed by so many different ones that MSN seems to be the stopping point for most.

So I have AIM, MSN, Gtalk
I prefer AIM... Gtalk is ok, very basic but probably all it needs to be.
But I keep MSN around because others have it.

I don't think so ICQ was the originator, but they have been pretty much dead for years now.

I don't know who you've been talking to. Everyone I know says yahoo is by far the worst.

I mostly use MSN just because it seems to be what everyone else I do business with uses, though I concur with Q it really sucks that you can't do decent file transfer with anything other than MSN client. I would have to also concur (as much as I hate it) that AOL is pretty much the best protocol. I can't speak to the client itself as I haven't used it in many years, but file transfers and messaging work perfectly through any third party client I've ever used. Gtalk seems to be ok, but like mentioned it just doesn't seem to have the adoption. More and more lately I've been having clients request skype, so I guess that's becoming quite prevalent as well.

ICQ had the random number for id.. you could never remember it. AOL had the whole "IM" thing as part of their main core so they may not be the originator of the concept but they definitely were the first to do it right using customizable screen names (IMHO)

Don't confuse "popular" with "common". MSN is included with the operating system and the default setting is to start at boot time. Effectively, anyone who has a Windows operating system has MSN.

I'd be more included to look at what chat programs are downloaded the most, as this would be a better measure of "popularity".

FYI, I only leave this types of threads open to attract bots. Keep in mind that most of the posters and topic starters of these "Generic Information and Questions" threads are all bots..
ChrissyPoo, jennyjenna, Winthrop... pretty much anyone with offsite signatures or less than 5 posts that post in these types of threads first.. But somehow bots of a feather flock together.. so I leave these topics open to keep the bots from making their own new threads.

Gtalk is my favorite than any other chats. Gtalk is getting popular these days due to its flawless service and performance. but now I don't even use messenger. Its quite boring now and one main thing is that this chat programs gets easily effected by viruses. I am a victim for that and now I stopped this chat. And MSN, I am not at all used to it.
