I agree with the guys that are saying it can be a distraction, but it is also an amazing marketing tool. I have already gained more business from twitter than from google alone. I use middleware to bring twitter and facebook to my email, rather than waste time playing games. I don't use twitter to tell people that I'm moving about the house or garden or when I'm having a coffee - but I will definitely tweet if I release a new template, or a new add-on or if I've found something interesting about opencart or any cool product I use.
Twitter is simply a microblog. This can then turn into a conversation, so it's almost like interactive email, or a slow chat. See Facebook is by invite only generally, but twitter is based on the search. I can search and follow any body and anyone can choose to follow me. The beauty is that if you choose your words and hash tags well, you can be found in the searches & you will find a community that actually wants to hear what you say, or in terms of marketing and ecommerce, they want to buy what you have.
So to the haters of social media, I say, don't hate it if you don't understand it. To the lovers of it, I say, don't get carried away with it - it can eat your life away until you are no longer socialising on a personal level & you are just interfacing with a website.
