Can anyone please suggest a good Australian-based web host for opencart?

www.webcity.com.au is at the top of my list so far.

I would highly recommend Ventraip, servers are located in Sydney and Melbourne, best plan is the (Economy cPanel Web Hosting plan). they actually answer the phone and provide quality service, and are by far the most competitive in pricing speaking from experience, im a happy customer and never had any issues with them.

What are they like for network performance - website and FTP?

The majority of Australian web hosting companies servers are located in the US, Ventraip servers are all located in Australia, This is the main reason i host with them, I did notice much faster pageloads, this will benefit you're website in a huge way & keep Google happy, I would advise giving them a call and speak to Angelo for more information, Good luck

i would recommend panthur.com.au

i have tried ventraip but prefer panthur.

panthur is slightly more expensive than panthur but it is still peanuts and you get what you pay for.

i'm just using 'shared hosting' btw .. not a dedicated server.
