Hi,
I've developed a number of OpenCart websites over the past few months for a number of my clients and they're all very impressed with the functionality of the system, apart from the shipping cost process.
Is there anyway OpenCart can be configured or modified to automatically add the shipping costs to the shopping cart? Before the customer has entered their address details?
I've searched through the forums and I can see that a similar question has been asked before but my requirements appear to be slightly different.
I have setup my OpenCart shop to calculate shipping costs using "Weight Based Shipping" and the cost of delivery remains the same regardless of where it is delivered, as we only deliver to addresses within the UK and a UK address is the only option in the checkout.
Is it possible to pre-select the UK delivery country, UK zone/UK geo zone, in the background (perhaps), purely to display the delivery cost in the shopping cart?
Maybe the store address could be used as a guide for the calculation?
Any guidance on this would be much appreciated and I plan to contribute to the forum on a regular basis, as I'm currently managing 5 OC websites, so I should hopefully be able pass on some knowledge!
Thanks,
Rich

hi...
agree, this would be a nice idea....the shipping on OC is pretty mundane at best..very limited, all the best shipping options are only available for purchase from what appear to be dodgy sources...a pity as this is supposed to be Open source
apart from shipping and a couple of bugs i have foulnd in 1.5 13 such as the gift voucher not functioning beyond the shopping cart, the rest of OC is great

You're right, OpenCart is superior to other free shopping cart software in the majority of areas but it just falls down on this requirement.
Although, I wouldn't be so harsh on the extensions created for OpenCart, I've purchased a number of them, some for shipping options and they've been well coded and I've received great technical support.
However, none of them seem to solve this problem, with providing shipping options before an address is entered.
It does seems strange, as most articles on ecommerce best practice show that customers want to know the full cost of their order including VAT and Delivery before they decide to make a purchase.
Any ideas or suggestions on this subject?
Thanks

I'm in the process of building a linear, simplified checkout as we speak and I plan to skip the payment and shipping method steps altogether as I only have one flat rate and one method of payment.
To get around the issue of informing the customer of the delivery fee, I am putting in an "Information" box in the left-column during checkout that details the delivery fee and payment method. I'm not sure if this is easy to picture but I'm more than happy to show this to you when it's done.
My point is, as long as you are informing the customer of your accepted payment methods and delivery fees / delivery options at every given opportunity i.e. on the product page, basket page and during checkout - it becomes less of an issue.
I know it's not a solution to the question above, but I hope it might help someone!

It's not quite what you're asking for, but I have a Shipping Estimate Module that would allow the customer to input their country, zone, and/or postcode and then apply the shipping cost from there. It's a little bit of extra work on their part, but it's the only option I know of currently to do what you're describing.
