The link they should be placing is the link to each product.
When they login as an affiliate, every product link includes the affiliate tracking id.
Thats the link they are ment to use.
There is no way to use any other page except the product links for an affiliate.
Which is why if you also noticed, when you generate an affiliate link, its based on product, not homepage.
