Integrating with User Login

Morning all,
We are looking to integrate OpenCart into a standard Codeigniter based website, part of which requires a log in. We want to integrate the log-ins, probably making use of OpenCart's login system for ease. This means that we need to set the same session data, so that OpenCart picks it up.

Can anyone point us in the right direction as to what Session variables need to be set and are any 'tokens' recorded back into the database as a cross-check in anyway?
