i'm setting up a new shop and am new to opencart. Is there a way to force user to login first before user can see product categories and products?

Yes, but you would have to add a mod to do it.
Q has a restricted category mod available here: http://theqdomain.com/ocstore/opencart_ ... icted_cats
This would hide categories and products and only make them visible to a certain group of users.

you could also wrap the category and product files around a check to see if the customer islogged, if not, redirect them to the login/account create page.

I'll be interested as well, I like to know what are the files that I have to Modify (which file is for Category and which one is for Product?) {Sorry but I'm super noob in Opencart O0 }
I looked at the Mod as well, but seems like it is not supporting 1.5.0.x (or not listed)
