Need some information on Model modifications

Hi guys,

planning on developing an extensive CMS and blog mod to take over from the built in functionality of the "information" module I realise that im going to have to modify some core files to achieve this. All im wanting to know is can i have some suggestions and guidelines as to the best way to go about this so it will be compatible with future versions / upgrades with minimal fuss?

would be very much appreciated as i will share the code on the free extensions, to return a little of what i have gotten our of OC.
