I'm shopping for a new eCommerce shopping cart site.
My question is "Does anybody really make any money selling on line "? With the initial cost of setting up a store and all the hours to maintain it I'm have a problem understanding what people are thinking. Example, How do people make any money when they offer free shipping? Also I'm tired of paying monthly and final sales fees. Tired of paying so called SEO exerts that don’t do a thing. Problem is I don’t know HTML at all. I need something very simple. Will Opencart work for me? Thanks

The answer is yes, free shipping because the shipping cost is already added in the product cost. Opencart will work or any other cart

If you don't know HTML as you put it then I think open cart is one of the better ones to condiser.

As for 'hours to maintain' then I say not really true. Yes, there will be a burst of considerable time and effort required to get it set up (a bit of learning required) and the products in but after that then there is little to do really, certainly no more than what you do selling on ebay.

As to cost, there is a bit of an up front cost but it is not that much in the scheme of things and the cost can be spread during the time that you are uploading products etc. You'll need to cost it yourself depending on which host you use, template, add-ons required, SSL and payment providers.

You don't have to offer free shipping and it does depend on the product. If you are selling £1 items then no one is going to be expecting free shipping. If you make yourself stand out then you can get away with charging shipping if you offer something that no one else does, you can tier shipping cost or build it into the product price (which is what most people probably do). Sometimes you can win on shipping and sometimes you can loose so there is no real answer to that question. Onve you've taken ebay fees out of the equation, that covers part of the shipping cost in anycase.

--Yes, people make money selling online same as those selling offline - you must have a unique product or sell it in a unique way. If your store is just like millions of others selling the same old tired stuff - save your money.

--There's no free lunch or free shipping - the cost is just written into the cost of the product.

--Those so-called SEO experts may have kept your store from moving down in rank but to you that looks like nothing. If your product is generic and you field crowded with me-too competitors, don't waste your time - get into a different field.

--The web is best for selling NICHE products. Those with a small but fanatically loyal market.

--OpenCart can be managed from the Admin by those with zero HTML knowledge better than most ecommerce stores. Everyone needs a techie from time to time though, so find one on a flat basis from a site like Elance.com.

yes people do make money selling stuff online. Otherwise they wouldn't do it, but it's just like selling stuff in a physical store it's work. You can't just pop up a store and expect money to roll in. As stated before Niche markets are the best. Regardless of what you sell you need to have unique content. Don't just copy and paste the manufacturers description in for your description write your own.

I've worked with many sites over the years. Some that never put a single product in their store and some that make tens of millions of dollars in sales a year. I worked on one site that sold those silicone bracelets and some of their affiliates were making over $1000/month, and that's just the affiliates percentage, so yes you can make very good money selling online.
