I deleted all the categories but left the items in place. I wanted to add my own categories and I get this:
Error: Incorrect integer value: '' for column 'parent_id' at row 1
Error No: 1366
insert into category set image_id = '41', sort_order = '15', parent_id = '', date_added = now()
Boy you were lucky, that you managed to get that far, when I tried to delete categories it said I couldn't because of products attached to it etc.
The only way that I have found to get around it, was by deleting the images, then the products and then the categories...mind you i think you can just change the category name, but remember there are sub categories too.

It is not hard to delete the categories. The warnings are there to stop people damaging the integrity of the OpenCart database and I don't remeber adding any integrity validation to categories. For products, images and a few others yes it has this validation rules, but not categories.
