MultiSite - Can it work with full domains?

We are looking at using open cart however the documentation regarding Multisite seems a little light on considering the complexit of such an exercise.

We wish to have multiple domain names - each with different products and template but a single backend for management purposes.

Example:

http://www.mainsite.com
http://www.othersite1.com
http://www.othersite2.com

Can this be done or is it limited to subdomains?

Can anyone point to some decent documentation on this ?

I can be done.

The big limitation with multi-store is that you cannot have different module settings per store, so any modules that are enabled are enabled for all stores and are in the same position on all stores. Plus for payment and shipping all stores will use the same information.
