Hello, I am relatively new with opencart, and am looking for a way that people can pay with visa or mastercard. I have seen extensions that require a 3rd party website, or paypal. Is there a way that they could just type their credit card number on payment? What do you think is the easiest, but most secure way of doing this? Thanks for any help!

OpenCart has no relationship with any credit card merchant service. You need to subscribe to your own service from what is available in your country, and then use one of the included payment modules or purchase an aftermarket module, like the ones that Q has developed.
My OpenCart client has a brick-and-mortar business with a credit card merchant account, so we have found that Q's off-line credit card module, with its very low one-time purchase price, suits us well. We receive email notification of a sale, manually process the credit card transaction, and then change the order's status from "pending" to "paid" or "complete," as appropriate.
If your volume is small enough, or if the options available to you are limited, you may find that accepting credit cards via PayPal suits you better.
As always, the more you can tell us about your particular situation, the more helpful the responses here will be. What country is your store in? Do you already accept credit cards in a brick-and-mortar or telephone order arrangement? Do you have any idea how many sales you will have in a month, or what the value of those sales might be? Answers to these questions will help you decide, with or without the help of your fellow forum members, which path may suit you best.
One of the best things about OpenCart is its modularity. You may decide to start out accepting credit cards via PayPal and then switch to a banking provider later, when your business grows.

Oh ok, this website is in the United States. I believe it may have 10 or 20 sales per month. Possibly with each sale being around $12. I'll check into the offline transaction, but does that store their information into a database? I'm just worried about it being secure. I took a look around and found this one:
