Forum Problem

Is anyone else experiencing this:

I write a post here and click Submit but instead of the post being handled, I get bumped out to the login screen and my post is lost.

I try to remember to paste it just in case now, but a few times I have abandoned support responses because I can't be bothered to write it all again.

Edit: It just happened with this post!

Yeb, you are banned but you have not been told yet ;D

Looks like a local issue as I can doe anything from anywhere on these forums.

Just tested it from where I live (Noord-Holland) and from where I am now, Eindhoven.

Yeah, I have a similar problem, but I don't get "bumped out" to the login screen. I just have time-out issues when trying to submit something or even just trying to view a post.

Yeah I haven't been logged out, but the forums have been slow lately and I have had a few timeouts.

Correct, I have mentioned this in the Moderators forum but at that time I was the only one having this issue, I'll guess.... :-[

yes it's gotten much worse since you mentioned it there.

There is a very good reason for this... phpbb3 sucks. I'd rather go back to phpbb2. Start voting for MyBB

Well I am...
Honestly back in the day there were only 3 forum boards that I would consider. Granted there were dozens of others, but I only counted the big 3: phpbb, vBulletin, or IPB

phpbb was a modders dream. Projects like phpbb-fm.com came fully modded with tons of features
vBulletin is commercial, but has definitely earned its value
IPB is also commercial and was good IMO but seems to have drifted back from mainstream as vBulletin took the major commercial foothold

Then SMF came out and I was skeptical at first, but it got popular quick and after seeing their mod system and their "quick check" moderation options, I was hooked.
So I opened my mind to 4 forum boards and refused to bother with others like ubb, yabb, etc

Up until recently I wouldn't have looked twice at MyBB either.. but I decided to take a look after seeing some poll where MyBB was leading the votes. I have to say I was impressed with what I saw.

The main reason (I thought) that Daniel switched from SMF to phpbb was because of the license. phpbb has GPL and SMF does not. Too bad it was such a terrible mistake. phpbb3 is just terrible compared to SMF.. or even phpbb2.. and the quick features and mod system that SMF offers just blows phpbb3 away. But if the license is the issue, well MyBB is GPL and has a mod system too so it looks to be the winner.

I hate SMF, in short: it sucks on all sides.

Moderating and/or setting up rights to boards etc. where the worst I have ever seen.

MyBB looks OK, I will download it and see how it works this weekend.

I like phpBB, it think the slowness maybe has to do with the server it runs on.

I've just moved a forum from SMF to vBulletin and am really regretting it. vBulletin just seems so dated and the bots have a field day. Time for a new forum on the block me thinks, what do you reckon Daniel, got a spare 5 minutes :D

Get to the hospital right away! You are going crazy with fever
SMF has checkboxes on the right side of the forums for moderators.
You want to delete a bunch of topics?
Check the ones you want. Choose "Delete" from the dropdown. Click Go. Javascript popup confirm. Done

In, Phpbb, you want to delete a bunch of topics? too bad
You need to go into each one separately and click delete
Then redirect to a confirmation page
Then redirect to a "Deleted successfully" page
Then redirect to the main forum.
Repeat for each post
10hours later, you are done.

It's a travesty that phpbb3 was ever released! I think phpbb2 at least had a mod for this.

phpbb isn't slow in the sense of loading. It is slow in the sense of all the damn landing pages.
New Post
Post success page <- unnecessary
redirect to post

Delete post
Delete confirmation page <- unnecessary, could be simple popup
Redirect to delete success page <- unnecessary again, could be ajax popup
Redirect to forum

Then talk about adding mods.. There is a mod for SMF to allow color tags inside code tags.. you can install straight from the SMFhacks list from within the admin. 2 clicks, done. I asked about this on the phpbb forums and they scoffed at the idea "the code tag doesn't need color as it is for code only"... I was like wtf.

Then the search.. phpbb.com forum admins have self-admitted that their search is useless. It is only designed to search for individual words, not phrases or combinations of words. And we all know if we use a word that it thinks is too common, it just throws an error. garbage. SMF search supports intuitive search.

There is a reason SMF is the highest rated on opensourcecms. It is still the king of the free forums hands down

I've been getting the same problems with this forum. I'll be typing a response to a post, click on submit, and then BAM...back to the log in page. Sucks.

I love MyBB. I'm using it for my forum.

I tried phpBB3...hated it. Too confusing.
I tried SMF... Didn't like it, don't know why just didn't.

Then found MyBB. It's easy, intuitive, has some great mods (that are easy to install), blah blah blah.

Wish OpenCart would switch to MyBB for the forums (in the future after 1.5 comes out).

I haven't had a lot of experience with forums myself, but I can understand why this one was changed from SMF to something else. The ranking system in SMF sucks! After all, someone could come in here making posts like "how do I do this?", "how do I do that?", "having trouble understanding the framework", and then jump on anybody else's post making crass comments about anything. At 400 posts they become a "hero" without actually contributing anything.

Personally, I'm glad that SMF is no longer being used. At least now we have a forum where a person gains respect based on the quality of their posts, rather than the quantity.

Eh. its like every other forum. The more you post the higher your rank. Vbulletin is the same. Phpbb doesnt even have a ranking system that I know of, and it sure wouldnt be based on quality. Still that is an invalid reason to dislike a forum. The ranking system can simply be disabled or one of the many mods could be used to improve it.

One mod that smf has is ajax lookup for new post subjects. So when making a new post it looks up other posts based on the same topic and suggests them to you. That alone would cut down on the ridiculous number of duplicate posts in this forum.

That indeed is something I would like to see.

But, the most important question of all: what is Daniel thinking about this?

Dunno... but I found a theme that matches the opencart theme for mybb. Also notice that mybb also has inline moderation. Seems all the good ones have it. Dunno why we should have to suffer with phpbb

And also the best plugin ever:

Is there an "easy" way to migrate the current db to MyBB?
