Yes, but not as in easy switching since some templates change many things.

If the templates are properly designed, they should NOT be replacing parts of the core, and they should be styled so that they can be switched between without any problems. If they do replace parts of the core, it's more of a template + extra modifications than strictly a template.

well only if the templates were designed improperly. A template should never touch the core files. Just means the person that wrote the template did a crappy job. Algozone is the worst for that they change all kinds of stuff for no reason whatsoever. As a matter of fact I've seen in at least two instances where their templates changed the SEO files and broke them so that they didn't work and if you put the default ones back it fixed everything, so they just decided to change a file they had no business touching and instead of adding functionality or fixing something that was broke they simply broke it so that you have to put the original back to restore functionality.

Yes, I agree with you, also Extensions should not touch core files, as you know we do update the core files so it will be removed with the update..

well unfortunately at this point in time extensions wouldn't be able to do very much if they didn't touch core files, so I don't see that changing in the near future.

well 1.5 update is going to break pretty much everything anyways. Even a properly designed theme is going to break for 1.5.
