I think it unlikely to find an extension as per your requirements since it would be very unlikely to be of interest to many people. When you chnage the order status you have the option to notify the customer with a message - so the automation would be somewhat useless ..
What you might find helpful depending on the reasoning for your requirement is opencart email templates pro. I think it is this one (but you should check with the developer) allows you to have different confirmations.
