When modifying php via mod, error 500

I know how to make modifications, but I don't understand how to change the php code to add, for example, my style file or display a field in the admin menu and from there add data to the database and from there to the template

You need to provide a LOT more info.
What opencart version to begin with. HOW you are wanting to modify code (events, OCMod, VQmod). What you are trying to do. An example of what you are trying to do would help.
