What is the easiest way to check if extensions have updates? Manually searching each one seems a bit of work but I guess if that's all we have. Searched and didn't see any extensions that did help out with that.
I know on a knock off of opencart they had something that checked the opencart cart version against the latest release and showed I think somewhere in the dashboard. It would be nice if in the extensions page it had a current version and latest version to show side by side there are updates and have the latest version take you to the extension page with a click.
Just a thought.

What you describe would be good for customers using 3PD extensions.
That would require also a general repository, where - at least - the extension infos are stored and maintained regular.
Additonally either a central repo for storing the extensons itself, or at least every developer has his own API.
Both could be used to check installed versions and are there new.
But - as already written in the discussion here, 99% of all developers do not use a public repository.
And a central repo maintained by OpenCart itself, was once a long time ago shortly discussed - but never realized.
While it would have many benefits:
1. central repo
2. all infos at one place
3. each customer can check that directory
4. this repo could be asked by a API - which could be used inside the extensions
5. better control over all published extensions - because then they are verified and each gets a unique ID
6. more security for users (customers)
And at least - what you asked for:
7. OpenCart stores could check for news and releases on the administration level for all installed extension at once - automatically
Sounds all good, but I guess will never be realized ..
