Hi everyone

Hope all is well with everyone, just wanted to get expert opinion on the PayPal Braintree for OpenCart. I currently run OpenCart version 3.0.3.2 and the extension works great and has been running great for years. I guess the question is more related to PayPal Braintree and setting it up as best as possible for OpenCart and to prevent fraud/chargebacks.

I know chargeback and fraud transactions are not 100% avoidable.

Right now, in my Braintree I have under "Fraud Management"
"Fraud Protection Basic" ENABLED.

If you go a little up , under "Basic" where you have "AVS" & CVV"
For CVV is enabled for all Transactions

Now under "AVS" here is where it gets confusing and lies my question...
For "Postal Code" & "Street Address" I have both ENBALED, so if both do NOT Match, the transaction gets rejected.
The problem with this, is if the customer makes an error on the way they enter their billing address, like the number and street name. The transaction gets rejected.

When I look at my transactions for the day in BrainTree, I can see some folks tried 3-5 times and the Gateway just rejects them every time and the reason is 99% of the time the Street Address entered does NOT Match.

So for some time, under Fraud Management for "AVS" I changed it to only reject if both the Street Address and Postal Code do NOT match. But then I run into the possibility of having more Fraud Transactions/ Chargebacks...

How do you folks that use BrainTree for OpenCart have these particular settings set too??

One last question, do most people (Merchants) allow customers to have both Billing address and Shipping address being different or do most of you out there ship the products only to the Billing address entered?

Just trying to see what other Merchants out there use or have in setup and see which is the best possible setting to avoid Fraud/Chargebacks.

Again, I know that Fraud transactions and Chargebacks are not 100% avoidable, been in business since 1999...

Looking forward to your opinion/s.

Good. If they can't put in the right info then they should be rejected.

I only ship some things to a different address. We check to see if other things look legit then we consider shipping to them but don't about 1/2 of the time without additional verification from the customer.

For the very high $ items we ONLY ship to the billing address and even then sometimes require more proof.

The AVS street check is not always accurate, so I typically don't recommend that people reject transactions based on that. It can lead to false positives, so unless you're in a very high-risk area of business, it's probably not worth it.

In my payment extensions you can flag the order with a particular order status if the AVS street check fails, so you could do something similar in your extension. You'd probably have to have someone modify it though, I don't think it has a setting to do that by default.

For shipping products to different addresses, I think Mike's method is pretty good. If you always require the same billing & shipping addresses then someone can't send a gift to someone through your site, but if that is a rare occurrence, it may be fine to enforce matching billing & shipping addresses. (You could also assign a different order status to those orders so you notice them and can manually review them.)

Lastly, if you're not using an anti-fraud service like MaxMind, I would recommend it. They don't always catch things but I find it's handy to have the extra info to try and figure out if an order is fraudulent. OpenCart has a built-in MaxMind extension, so you just need to sign up for their MinFraud service and then enter the information into the Extensions > Anti-Fraud > MaxMind area.
