As a newcomer to OpenCart, I am curious to know if the platform provides a built-in capability for maintaining customer balances and efficiently tracking amounts owed and paid. My search within the system has not having any apparent "purchase order" payment methods or "make payment" options. I just want to ensure that I haven't overlooked an existing feature before i start exploring into external solutions or customizations.
If anyone has recommendations, or alternative approaches for handling customer balances and payments within OpenCart, I would greatly appreciate your suggestions.

OpenCart does have a Transactions feature, where you can give customers store credit. This will automatically be applied to their next order, so I'm not sure if that will work for what you have in mind.
Payment methods wouldn't hook into that system by default, but there are probably some extensions that will let customers purchase / choose to use a balance. That way you could use it more like a wallet on your site. You should search the opencart.com marketplace (https://www.opencart.com/index.php?rout ... /extension) to see what you can find, unless someone else posts some suggestions in here.
