Hello everyone! First off, my apologies if this is posted in the wrong forum. I thought I had seen a forum topic here before along the lines of "Hire a developer" but I did not see that today.
Our website www.micro-trains.com is on OpenCart 2.2.0.0 running on the Journal v2.16.1 theme.
We've had numerous security issues in recent months and our web host said we can solve these problems by upgrading the OpenCart version on our site. I admit I have a lingering doubt about this, because there are still a lot of people using OpenCart 2, evidenced by the active support forum here for OpenCart 2.
So, please anyone feel free to set me straight if upgrading OpenCart isn't really the likely cure for security issues. (Website hacks, at one point for example our domain was redirecting to another unknown and completely unrelated URL).
But if you guys agree that, yeah we better upgrade: can I ask about hiring a developer here, or is there another place I could go to find a list of developers we could hire to upgrade the site for us (particularly with an eye to retaining as much of its current front-end and back-end functionality as possible)?

While there are some security vulnerabilities that have been patched in later versions, they are not of the sort that can easily be exploited, as far as I'm aware. They would likely require some sort of interaction by an admin to do what you describe.
What is far more likely in my experience is weak/stolen passwords or security vulnerabilities found in themes and extensions. Old versions of the Journal theme are known to have vulnerabilities.
Of course upgrading OpenCart will probably force you to upgrade your theme and extensions anyway. You would need to check there are newer version that would be compatible with whatever version of OpenCart you decide to upgrade to.
The correct forum section to post asking for quotes would be.

It would be more practical to address any remaining issues rather than opting for a store upgrade. This is Godaddy telling you to upgrade? Rather than upgrade, check the PHP version you are using. You are right that many are using older Opencart versions but they have used modified version that supports PHP 8+. From a hosting aspect, there's also the option of using a hosting provider that includes CloudLinux. Also, after reading this I realize it is important to include that we have intentionally kept our server at an older PHP version (version 5 I believe), because whenever it has been updated to current PHP version the site always has a PHP error at the top of the site on almost every page (When PHP is updated it is usually GoDaddy doing that without us asking when we let them know we're having issues - we end up telling them "No, we have to keep it at this version otherwise we get errors", so they put it back to the previous version and resolve whatever other issue we're having)
