Downloaded 4.0.0.0, started with browser in the install folder, screen for upgrade pops up, but no progress and clicking on the "Continue" does not seem to do anything. Tried several browsers and there is no error and no error file on the server either. Any ideas?

Is it a live site you are trying to upgrade?
If yes I would hold off.
But beyond that we can't guess without more info. Is there any errors (anywhere)? Webhost logs? Developer console?

Well, my hope was simply that there were things that never worked in 3.x (e.g. google captcha) would be fixed. I got past the point of the "upgrade", but all it did was completely messing up the website to the point that error 500 is all it produces. So, yep, looks like V4 is a pile of crap.
