Most free php scripts have the ability to auto update the script from the admin side. please make this avaliable in opencart.

Well, the OpenCart upgrade function is quite unstable, and doesn't really support 3rd party extensions.
Without a proper package management used by both the core OpenCart and extensions it won't be possible, not with the amount of poor-quality extensions anyway.
