I would like to finally upgrade from Opencart 1.5.6.4 to the latest version 3.0.3.6. I am trying to make an ideal decision as far as the theme is concerned. Many of the extensions out there that are theme dependent support the default theme and Journal theme by default. Other than that I am concerned about SEO friendliness and UI/UX. I have a feeling that the Journal theme is not very supported or liked in the Opencart community, despite the fact that it is the most sold theme on themeforest. Are there any specific themes that you would recommend to consider before I start building out the new site? I understand that there is many aspects to consider but I would greatly appreciate an informed consensus.
Well, then better check https://Github.com/opencart first, atI would like to finally upgrade from Opencart 1.5.6.4 to the latest version 3.0.3.6
least, if you don't plan, to belong to the latest OC Testers.

Or then, either select the already highly proven OC v.2.3.0.2 , or then, at least
the updated OC v.3.0.3.6 from here:

And when it comes to Journal Theme Extensions, just be aware, that you will
not receive much Support around here, it's too away from default OC Code, and
it creates 1'000+ Liner Source, to show a simple Page. Just check on a Site, using it.
You will therefore highly depend on Journal Support, if you run into Problems.
They know, why they don't have their own User Forum, it would be a full-time Job ...
Just figured ..., good Luck!

Stay away from themeforest aka envatomarket, and of course stay away from Journal3. See also this forum thread. Choose a good-quality and standard-compliant web theme from e.g. the OpenCart marketplace.

If you want a theme that doesn't modify OpenCart, I like these CSS themes:

Journal has a lot of bells and whistles for its price, but you're bound to run into issues if you install any other extensions. If you don't plan on doing that then it probably would be fine, it has a lot of configurability --- just keep in mind that comes at the risk of any other extension you're installing not working or requiring paid support.
